A sample of one
Well, I don’t teach the Research Methods class or the Evaluation Methods class now in development here at SLIS, but if I did I probably would throw this in as a teaser about the importance of knowing how to interpret research findings and also how to go behind the media soundbite (or blog post!) for more detail, critical thinking, and further implications.
Though I have to confess I got caught myself last year with a suggested reading from the usability research literature that some people in the class quickly pointed out employed a sample size of three users.
So, based on a sample size of one (myself), I suggest that we should all be reading the Stats blog from George Mason University on a daily basis and thinking hard about what we learn there. Otherwise, we’re getting the placebo, aren’t we?
