Innkeeper at the roach motel
I’m putting together the final list of things for this fall’s Digital Collections class, and my problem is that, as usual, some of the most timely and thoughtful writing on these topics tends to be in the blogosphere, like this, rather than in the “published scholarly literature.” Though some of it eventually makes it there, of course: for example, Dorothea Salo’s fascinating “Innkeeper at the Roach Motel” has been available through her Caveat Lector blog for a while before finally appearing in Library Trends this fall. She has kindly made it available as a preprint here. Well worth reading even if you have no intention of taking my course this fall…. and, by the way, I don’t mean to imply that I feel like the innkeeper at the roach motel, even though I suspect that, as usual, some people are going to be “stuck” with it just because they can’t get into their preferred classes (an especially long waiting list for LIS 5023, for instance.)
P.S. And the plethora of new products and plug-ins related to all of this isn’t helping me stay on top of things, either!
Heh. Given your “fire hose” approach, I feel a little sorry for the folks taking your class just to take a class.
Thanks for reminding me of the Salo article. It’s been in my “to read” pile for a while now, but now it’s on top!
Well, they’ve been warned! By the way, please keep us all “posted” on that job search: sounds like it will be an interesting one….
