KM/LIS 5433 Virtual Project Fair

December 24th, 2009

The Fall 2009 class of “Design and Implementation of Web-Based Information Services” is now completed. For those who are interested in what we did, here’s the list of final projects:

Group Projects:

Book Schooner Branch
This group’s project was building a pilot “virtual branch” of the Koha open-source OPAC in order to explore the utility of the “Koha with Class” initiative for future semesters. They populated their pilot branch with selected book titles relevant to the course, invited members of the class to become the branch’s “patrons,” and were able to import many of the relevant book covers for the collection by installing the appropriate API from Amazon. The group determined that this would indeed be a worthwhile experience for future students who wish to experiment “hands-on” with library OPAC functionalities.
(Project Team: Alyssa Dossett, Sergio Lopez-Alvarez, Bob Zipf)

Doc’s Chicago Style
This group’s project was to develop an innovative introduction to the School’s required style manual for entering students. (The name “Doc’s” was chosen in homage to the instructor— or at least I’d like to think it was!)
(Project Team: Karen Haught, Tara McLeod, Jennifer Tatum, Shanan Vandiver, Risa White, Brian Young)

SLIS Tag Team
This group’s project involved identifying and organizing a list of 200 books that would be helpful in focusing LIS students’ professional reading in particular areas for both coursework and competencies. The project was done on Library Thing, and will be linked to the OLISSA Facebook page.
(Project Team: Tara Allison, Alexander Gates, Stacy Morehead, Mary Parker)

The 21 Things
After going through the well-known “23 Things” (developed by Helene Blowers for library staffers), this group decided to develop a modified and wikified version that would be especially suited to entering LIS students.
(Project Team: Taryn Kingery, Elizabeth Maynard, Anna Todd)

Erin Fehr’s Native Americans in Hollywood Film Music

Kati Gordon’s Kim Monday, Virtual Librarian

Shae Mitine’s Red Dirt Rebellion Roller Derby Resources

Sarah Olzawski’s Norman Community Services
